    will, william james
"'Will you or won't you have it so?' is the most probing question we are ever asked; we are asked it every hour of the day and about the largest as well as the smallest, the most theoretical as well as the most practical, things. We answer by consents or nonconsents and not by words. What wonder that these dumb responses should seem our deepest organs of communication with the nature of things. What wonder if the effort demanded by them be the measure of our worth as human beings. What wonder if the amount which we accord of it were the one strictly underived and original contribution which we make to the world."

~ William James, The Principles of Psychology ~
(The Briefer Course). Chapter 17, Will.

This is also in chapter XXVI of the long course, where I found it most recently.

    tsimtsum

An important concept in the Kabbalistic story of creation is tsimtsum. In the beginning there was nothing and nobody but God and God was everywhere. In order to create anything the first thing to be done was to contract from being everywhere so that there would be room to create something. And into the huge void became the potential for anything and this potential was so vast that you got everything you see around us, including of course all the strife and sin and evil that we little humans have to deal with which we often find so ugly and unfair. In the grand scheme these are trivial little details. This is the basic idea around tsimstsum and the fall. In the terms of our lives the strife and whatnot are overwhelming but for the big guy up in the sky it doesn't really mean squat.

In terms of my forum experience you have possibilities and breakdowns encapsulated neatly in there. You want to create something new in your life you have to make space to do it. A lot of space. And when you do that anything can happen. And a lot of shit is likely to happen as well. This is something to be alert to. Look and listen and do it again.

There is a fabulous free online resource for Kabbalah which I presume other people might find as interesting as I do. Depth of Beginning by colin low

    weekend update
I am off to see the wizard. The horseback ride went really well. I didn't do anything silly. We watched the Russian "War and Peace" for six hours. This is the ultimate rescue seduction love story if you have never seen it. All the russian villains (Helene, Dolokhov, Anatole) are blonde!

    snapshots from my fabulous life

This is the google satellite of my office, my apartment, my neighborhood:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.784846,-95.613070&spn=0.007094,0.013485&t=k&hl=en

The seven triangular buildings in the northeast corner have my office in there. My apartment is about 2000 m to the southwest. If a pedestrian could go across the interstate with heavy construction I could easily walk to work. Pedestrians are prohibited, unfortunately. In fact being a pedestrian for any distance in my neighborhood is rather impossible. There is a park about three miles north of here where walking ifsgrand, but you have to go through crappy traffic if you want to walk at the wrong time of the day.

In spite of that there is much open space and all kinds of wildlife. A couple days ago there was an owl on my balcony railing right after sundown. He looked a lot like this guy:

    http://www.umich.edu/~archive/msdos/info/birds/owl-face.gif

Have also seen coons, possums, bats, vultures, hawks, squirrels, crows, starlings, doves, bluejays, mockingbirds, sparrows, and magpies.

Yesterday I went to Katy, TX to a huge shopping mall:

    http://www.houstoncl.com/shopping/katymills.htm

This is about ten miles to the west of here and it is almost unbelievable how huge everything is. Like a Ford dealer next to the interstate with three thousand cars on the lot. Apartment complexes with thousands of units. Within a couple miles of the Katy Mills mall they have three fancy country clubs with mansions all around. Well to me they are mansions. The billboards outside the developments say the prices start at 120K.

    God what a country!

I wanted to buy some clothes at the mall but I did not find much. I like to wear plain gap polos 100% cotton and they have a large gap store at that mall but they had no plain polos and no 100% cotton polos. They had hundreds of polyester striped polos for 15$. I think the last time I bought one I paid 30 so maybe there is no market for what I want any more and I have evolved into old fogeyhood.

Today's houston chronicle had an article on Katrina refugee crime in Houston:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3549099.html

So sad. They did not mention the riot in the high school a couple weeks ago where 30 people got arrested and it was a katrina refugee v. houston gang battle. It is a shame many of the folks have worn out their welcome here and there isn't anyplace for them to return to. The headlines from New Orleans remain truly horrible instead of just miserable as the Woody Allen character said to the Diane Keaton character in "Annie Hall".

Sent my poem into poet leader for the katrina collection. If you want to go to the best poetry show in New Orleans, this is where you go:

If my poem makes the cut I will post the information here. If it doesn't I probably will ignore that.

You are the Final Lover. Romanic, honey-tongued
romeo, you are the master of love's last kiss.
You woo the young ladies, pluck them from

    update
Whoopee I have my apartment DSL up and running so I can drink and post now. Also download music files I have been drooling over. And post pictures of me shirtless as requested by my only livejournal friend (so far). Hi Layo!

Found one community with real communal type stuff occurring so it is only a small matter of time before I have more than one livejournal friend. Flamewars drama ex-friends practically everything is now just a few keystrokes and a mouseclick away.

    Why isn't this happening faster?
After creating my livejournal last weekend I followed up by letting it just sit there naked all week. Tried to search for communities. Searching on Houston + my interests did not generate much data. Almost all the communities I came upon were more like ghost towns. For example one of the first I checked out had three total entries and had not been updated in over a year. That type thing.

Found three people I want to be my friend but I am too shy to ask them right now. Later after I get used to this will almost certainly do so. So at the moment I still have only one friend on all the livejournal. In Transactional Analysis the name of that game is "Poor Me".

Well I have a better idea on community search and that is 1.) no geographic limitation and just see where there are a lot of recent posts on my interests and 2.) open up to the whole state of Texas. Am out of time to fool around with this at least for today so will do that later.

There is a project management rule of thumb (name I have forgotten) which goes something like this: first estimate the amount of time it will take; then double it; then double it again, and that is your best real estimate of how long it is going to take to do the job.

Did you know spell check flags livejournal as being misspelled?
